The company's logo is a yellow oval with a black [[cat]] carrying her [[kitten]] in her mouth, symbolizing the company's promise that they take care of items entrusted to them as though the items were their own family. The company is often colloquially referred to as 黒ねこ (''Kuroneko'') which means "black cat" in Japanese. ==概説==
元々は[[三越]]や[[松下電器産業]]などの専属配送業者であったが、[[1976年]]に、当時の[[小倉昌男]]社長（故人）の決断により、個人を対象にした小口高速配送システム([[宅配便]])「[[宅急便]]」を開始して、大手企業からの専属配送事業から脱却を図る。

以来、「宅急便」のサービス提供地域を全国津々浦々に拡大するとともに、[[日本通運]]など他社の参入に対しては「スキー宅急便」「クール宅急便」「サイクリングヤマト便」「[[宅配便#メール便|クロネコメール便]]」や時間指定など新サービスの開発や、[[コンビニエンスストア]]（※）や一般商店の発送受付窓口化を「顧客サービスの向上こそが利益の拡大につながる」と他社に先行して行い、「'''クロネコヤマト'''の宅急便」の[[ブランド]]イメージの確立に成功する。（なお、宅配便進出にいたる経緯や基本的な経営戦略は、小倉昌男元社長の著書「[[経営学]]」（[[日経BP]]社）に詳しいほか、[[高杉良]]の小説「挑戦尽きることなし」（[[徳間書店|徳間文庫]]、[[講談社]]文庫）の題材ともなっている）

最近では、郵便局の「[[ゆうパック]]」を新たに導入したいローソンと、従来通り排他的契約を求めるヤマトとが騒動に発展。ヤマト側は譲らず、[[郵政民営化]]論を巻き込み、公平性に欠けているとの意見広告を展開した。ローソン本部は宅配取次契約の中途解約を通告。ヤマトは[[独占禁止法]]違反で[[日本郵政公社]]を提訴し対立を深めた。

近年は、企業からの発送である商流を主力とする[[佐川急便]]の取り扱い個数K伸びが著しく、集計方法によっては[[佐川急便]]がトップの場合もある。但し、商流の価格が安いため、依然ヤマト運輸が収益率は高い。

ちなみに、ヤマト運輸も他の物流企業と同じく、通運業務・航空貨物輸送・引越し輸送業務を展開しているが、売上に占めるシェアは大きくない。

かつて松下電器と関係があったためか、配達員が持っている端末はPanasonicである。また、三越店にては、荷受所を出店している。

トヨタ自動車と宅配仕様バン型車「クイックデリバリー」を共同開発した縁からも、配送用小型トラック（市街地及び近郊配送用、最大積載量4t以下）及び１BOXバンの80％以上はトヨタ車である。

[[中央大学]]とは古くから交流があり、中央大学生は就職しやすい企業のひとつである（専用枠という所謂[[コネ]]がある）。またIYグループとも同じ理由により、関係が深い。そのため、ミレニアムグループ傘下の百貨店のギフトが、今後どのようになるかが見所である。

[[2005年]][[11月1日]]付けを持って同社は株式移転に伴う[[持ち株会社]]・ヤマトホールディングス株式会社に称号を変更し、事業会社・ヤマト運輸（新設）がその傘下に収まる体制へ。なお、この他に[[インターネット]]事業、金融事業などの新会社を設立させる方針である。

;注意事項
郵政公社と対立はしているが、現段階では法律には勝てない為、日本郵政公社法に準じての配達のみ行うことができる。荷物の中に[[信書]]（手紙）を入れて送ることは信書便法に反する。ときたま荷物の中に手紙を入れて送る利用者がいるが、それを受けて配達をすると違法行為の一環となる。そのため、荷物の内容に関しては受け取り拒否される場合がある。更に、有価証券（商品券も含む）、現金などの類も禁止されている。宅急便に関しては30万円までの保証がされているが、上記禁止事項に違反している場合には、保証の対象とならない。
